Brief BIO of Jan Lowe AGRA

Jan is a professional artist since 1990 and a tutor of Scratchboard Art since 2012. Is a signatory member of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists. Convinced she inherited her love of nature and its unique animals from her dear late father, a wildlife photographer and later farmer. During her active younger years, she was an activist for the environment and the protection of wildlife and all animals. In her current years, she is offering a home for animals under rescue and protection.

Her professional career found her constantly traveling, not only nationally but internationally and she had the opportunity to see the world and the amazing places and unique animals. Whilst in the US she completed her Fine Arts Degree.

She paints in all mediums, although she loves Scratchboard & Watercolour. In her teachings, she encourages the student to draw what they see, and how they felt about the subject, to have faith in their ability and judgment, and to remember it is a painting - and it was made by the artist, not a photograph! She encourages her students to keep learning no matter how good they become.

Jan, herself is a constant student of art and studied the works of many of the masters, including Rembrandt & Sargent. Attends workshops and lectures of Bob Wade, David Taylor, Haley Brown, Robert Bateman, and many others. Inspired by the brilliance of the US watercolorist Mary Whyte. She admires the contemporary masters—Willem de Kooning and Cy Twombly.

Her works have won many awards nationally and internationally, and she exhibits both solo and joint exhibitions since the mid-1990 and exhibits regularly internationally and throughout Australia. She has given back to the art community through volunteering for the last three decades and continues to do so.

Moving to the country from the beautiful city of Melbourne to Phillip Island in 2016 - presents new challenges - but what beauty the little island has in wildlife - our little farm which we are turning into a sanctuary for wildlife - is packed full of creatures. Mindful that we are just caretakers of this land and the animals are enjoying the space and tranquility. An artist's dream!

2022 presents new challenges and solo exhibitions (in 2022 & 2023) and new paintings! Through her paintings, she tells a story, capturing the moment, the passion, and the soul.

She is a member of the Australian Pastel Society (Secretary), Editor for the Queensland Wildlife Artists Society, Editorial Team (Downunder) for the International Scratchboard Society of the US (formerly VP & Editor), Australian Guild of Realist Artists (former Editor, President, On-Line Curator, and Councillor).
