Effect Of Community Participation On Search Results.

I'm still a relative newbie on this site, having been here only since March '17. One common recommendation I've come across is that participating in discussions, groups and contests, etc, will somehow improve your search result placement. I admit that I was skeptical about this approach, but have warmed to the idea. Here are a couple of cases in point.

This image of a sea nettle was one of my first submissions, and originally was on one of the last pages of search for "sea nettles". Since then, I've entered it in several groups and contests and now the image is adorned with some comments, likes and favorites. As a result, it has moved up in search to page 4 of 10, even though it hasn't (yet) sold!
Art Prints

This one is newer, but since I uploaded it, I've posted it to the "new photography" thread, the "alphabet" game and the "try this", as well as several contests and groups. It's already on page 1 of "Positano Sunset" search!

Sell Art Online

So I think this helps answer the question. Yes community activity definitively helps!

We are not supposed to be posting any new images threads for now but you can add yours below. This is the monthly thread for August uploads ONLY

I'm not a mod, but I don't think David's intent was to start a new image thread, just to illustrate his point.

David, yes indeed. I do keep telling people but, you know, they refuse to believe me, even though I know things ::nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more::

Community has a big part to play

Thank you to Jessica for pointing to those other threads. I do hope you have added the work there also, David if new. Your images are fine here too as examples of your subject

i don't think it plays a strong part, but i think it plays a small part. because when people ask about sales then join the forum, they often get a sale there after. but people are often swept to the front for a search term. and then vanishes again. like a whale breathing.

also keep in mind that the search page now has like 72 results, compared to the 36 we had. so it may just be further up because of that.

but being on the forum does get you some exposure either way.

Thanks, Isabella. I don't have a big presence on social media, but have enjoyed spending time here with community.

It is a truly wonderful community btw - so participating makes sense in every aspect :o)

Well, it can't have too much of an influence otherwise some embarrassingly low quality work might end up on the front page.

Search engines like Google reward relevant and useful searches. If it comes up in search, gets clicked on and the searcher spends time there, it is considered a good result.

On a store site there is no more reliable measure that the search result was useful to the buyer then when they put something in their cart.

Community shows an active site which search engines love. They love to see activity, links going to the site and lots of time spent on a site.

I have a related question. When posting to an approved image thread, do you take the image from your AW or from your FAA page? Or does it matter?

Abbie

So is all member activity here tracked and put into a database for search engine ranking?

you can take it from any site. i tend to do FAA because i'm logged in here, there is no real good reason to go either way on it. ideally its better to use the AW.

Completely off topic, but do you know where your Litman family comes from?

One of my great grandmothers was a Lydia Littmann from Brandenburg, Germany.

All that you do here or that people do on your work. It is more what people do to you................so if you are doing to them........ mud?

"so if you are doing to them........ mud?"

I think that needs clarification.

Edward, I'm sure you're right that there's much more to search than community activity here. My guess is that views, likes, and comments on particular images have more impact than just time spent on the discussion board. I'm sometimes amazed how many likes and comments some people are able to amass in such a short time. Maybe that has more to do with how many FB and Twitter friends they have, but I don't have accounts there.

David Smith, my paternal grandfather emigrated to the US from Russia in the 1900's. Not sure what part of Russia. Litman is not really that uncommon a name. There are several David Litmans out there, including someone who has a website for "David Litman Photography", so here I added my middle initial!

the more you appear here, the more people like, follow etc you - and that does help in the search a bit. i know as i post here, i get more followers. the people that get a lot of comments - probably give a lot of comments. and those people feel the need to do a tit for tat kind of thing. i wouldn't waste time adding comments and following people myself.
