Need Advice On Good Computer For My Wacom Cintiq

I'm finally going to replace my 8 year old computer as my Cintiq is painfully slow! Can someone give some advice on what computer will work well for me. I do illustration (many layers) in photoshop cgi4 at 300 or 400 dpi. I don't game if that makes a difference. If you work with a cintiq using photoshop, can you share what computer-computer set-up works well for you. Your advice is much appreciated.

The bleeding edge is the Microsoft Studio Pro, it's too new for there to be a lot of feedback on it but it looks like it would be a great replacement for the Cintiq.

Thanks David, that looks great but I only have about $750 to spend at the moment, lol. I forgot to mention that I also so use 2 large monitors along with my cintiq when using it.

Hmmm,,i just got the surface,,i would get a surface notebook or imac notebook if it were me, depending upon my funds and which platform im used to..

Hi Jon, would love to, but I will have to settle for less expensive computer set-up, lol.

Walt,

Here ya go! https://www.amazon.com/CybertronPC/pages/5581876011

I bought one of these under $500, 16 gb RAM and very fast! Rated one of the top 10 Desktops!

Sorry Walt, I assumed you wanted something comparable to the Cintique, (pressure sensitive touch screen), I don't believe you can get anything like that anywhere close to $750.

". I forgot to mention that I also so use 2 large monitors along with my cintiq when using it."

This is possible with a Surface Pro, but you'll need a docking station, and you'll have to buy used to get one under $750. I have a Surface Pro 3 with i5 and 128mb I think you could get one of those for less than $750 used, you'll still need a docking station though ($150 I think), not sure how well it would run Photoshop though, but it's got to be better than an 8 year old Cintiq.

Thanks Rich, that is certainly in my ballpark. My big problem is that my cintiq screen is a bit slow following my stylus on the Cintiq (maddening really). Do you use a similar computer to the one on Amazon for your cintiq? If so, does your cintiq screen keep up with your stylus and have good speed in photoshop?

Thanks David, I feel umcomfortable buying a used used computer. My Cintiq is brand new, my computer is 8 years old.

I wish I were more articulate, lol.

Since you work with big monitors anyway, I'd forget notebooks/laptops etc
- cpus in those will be slower compared to their desktop counterparts, mainly because of cooling constraints.

For the lowest possible delay in your specific case, two most important factors will be
- high cpu clock (the more GHz the better)
- gpu-acceleration working in adobe/photoshop.

The most cost/performance effective graphics workstation in this price range would be a desktop pc, with
- a quad-core i5 cpu, haswell generation or newer (no real need to pay more for the latest kaby lake)
- max amount of RAM memory you can put in there (should fit 32GB, if money is tight 16GB will be ok too)
- nvidia based graphics card, low-end model from a recent generation - that would be something like gtx 1050 now
- an Intel or Samsung ssd hard drive for system, programs and work-in-progress (~250GB should be enough)
- a big spinning hdd for archive (4TB drives should be best in cost/capacity)
- another big spinning hdd for backups, pref. NOT identical to the one above

Sorry Walt, I completely misunderstood, I get it now, you are looking for a new desktop to run your Cintiq touchscreen monitor. My mind went directly to Cintiq companion, thinking you were looking for a replacement for one of those.

Hi John, I'm not real computer savy. I think your saying that I need a quad-core i5 cpu, 16-32 gigs of ram, a gtx 1050 now graphics card or equivalent, an Intel or Samsung ssd hard drive - 250 gigs, a big spinning hdd - 4 TB and another large one for backup. Thanks John.

Hi David, it's not you, I just did not explain it that well, lol.

Thanks Rich, I will take a look.

That's right.
Give this information to a nearby pc shop, and they should give you a parts list with prices to work on further tailoring.
Two more alternative ways to get those specs in a ready-made-box:
- cheaper -> search ebay for post-lease equipment, find a seller that is willing to add missing pieces to suit your specs
- more expensive -> all-new from a shop with good reputation for silent machines, like puget systems

One more thing about the cintiq itself:
Apart from the delay, you can also see some offset between your pen and cursor on-screen.
Calibrating the cintiq properly should mostly take care of this, but it will never completely go away because of the thickness of the glass:
there is always some distance between pen tip, and the actual screen below the glass.
Looking at the tip from different angles will show you different offset, and most people notice this while working in the corners.

Thanks John for the info. My cintiq setting are closer now but still slow.

Thanks Rich, this is closer to what I can afford and looks like the too top ones have real good reviews, but have not made up my mind yet.

Went from close to 40 years as a Windows user, to an iMac last year, never been happier, everything just works :) Wacom tablet works great with it. Very responsive. I do a lot in PS and other Post Processing software packages

Rich, do you create large many layered files using photoshop using a cintiq with your computer, how many monitors.

Hi Bill, I have always used a PC.

I have my new computer up and running. My old computer just up and died. Lucky I took writtin notes of this post. Sense I could not order online (no computer), I went to Best Buy and purchased a Cyberpowerpc ultra gamer desktop. It has just about what yall suggested. I'm using both monitors and my Cintiq and am happy about how fast everything works for me now. Not thrilled with windows 10 so much though. A big thanks to Jon, Rich, John, David, John and Bill for your advice. I hope this post will help other artists as it has me. I didn't realize what I have been missing.

Walt
