Shown here are approximately 200 of El Escorial’s 2675 windows! El Escorial (Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial) is a vast building complex located in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, near Madrid Spain. The building is the most important architectural monument of the Spanish Renaissance. Construction of El Escorial began in 1563 and ended in 1584. It has functioned as a monastery, basilica, royal palace, pantheon, library, museum, university, school and hospital. El Escorial is the 29th largest palace in the World, measuring 224 meters (735 feet) wide and 153 meters (502 feet) deep and having an area of more than 30,500 square meters (330,000 square feet). In addition to the windows, the complex contains 16 inner courtyards, 4,000 rooms, 1,200 doors, 24 kilometers (15 miles) of passageways, 86 staircases, 73 sculptures and 88 fountains. Today, the Escorial is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is one of Spain’s most visited landmarks.
