Description
Western Auto Building and Kansas City Train Yard" by Catherine Sherman
The Western Auto Building and its rooftop sign is a downtown Kansas City, Missouri, icon, and is easily viewed from the Kansas City Union Station. The sign is on top of the former corporate headquarters of Western Auto Supply Company at 2107 Grand Boulevard and is visible from many vantage points in Kansas City.
The 12-story Western Auto building was transformed into loft condominiums; Western Auto Supply Company, known more widely as Western Auto, supplied automobile parts and accessories. It operated about 1,200 stores across the United States. It was started in 1909 in Kansas City, Missouri, by George Pepperdine, who later founded Pepperdine University.
Kansas City's Union Station Missouri is busy with both freight and passenger traffic. Opened in 1914, Union Station serves Kansas City, Missouri, and the surrounding metropolitan area. Closed for years, but it was restored, reopening in 1999 as a series of museums and other public attractions. In 2002, Union Station saw its return as a train station when Amtrak began providing public transportation services and has since become Missouri's second-busiest train station.
Missouri is home to an extensive rail system. Railroads are essential to the state’s economy and the region’s economic competitiveness. Missouri has the tenth largest number of railroad miles in the United States with approximately 4,800 miles of track, 2,500 miles of yard track and about 7,300 public and private highway-rail crossings. Nineteen freight railroads operate in the state, carrying the fourth largest amount of freight tonnage in the nation. Kansas City and St. Louis are ranked as the second and third largest rail transportation centers in the nation, respectively. Overall, the state’s rail system moves the equivalent of more than 20 million truckloads per year.
