Description
"Wabaunsee Courthouse, Alma, Kansas" by Catherine Sherman.
The Wabaunsee County Courthouse sits on a square in Alma, Kansas. It was built in 1931, replacing the first courthouse, which was built in 1872. The current courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 26, 2002
Wabaunsee County was one of the first 33 counties created by the Kansas Territorial Legislature in 1855. The county was originally named Richardson County, but in 1859 the named was changed to Wabaunsee, named after the famous Pottawatomie Indian leader Wabansi. This request resulted because William P. Richardson, whom the county was named after, was pro-slavery while many in the county were abolitionists.
The county contains the cities of Alma, Alta Vista, Maple Hill, McFarland, Paxico, Harveyville, Eskridge and Willard (part). The first white settlers in Wabaunsee were said to have been a band of outlaws known as the McDaniel Gang. They built a cabin near Harveyville from where they preyed on wagon trains on the Santa Fe Trail. Supposedly a box containing $75,000 in gold was stolen. A legend says that much later, a "preacher-fisherman" came to the area, dug up the gold from beneath the ruins of the cabin and left as mysteriously as he came.
