Description
"Veterans Bench, Eisenhower Museum and Library, Abilene, Kansas" by Catherine Sherman.
Situated among canna lilies and petunias in summer, this bench was donated by Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, Kansas Chapter, Manhattan, Kansas, to honor all World War II veterans.
The bench sit on the grounds of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood home in Abilene, Kansas.
The Battle of the Bulge (December 16, 1944 - January 25, 1945) was the largest and bloodiest battle fought by the United States in World War II, according to the inscription on the bench. 640,000 America soldiers fought, 19,276 were killed, 23,554 were captured or missing and 47,493 were wounded.
The Battle of the Bulge was the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II. It was launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in eastern Belgium, northeast France, and Luxembourg, towards the end of World War II.
An inscription on the bench: "Lest we forget their generation honoring the men and women have have served but let us be glad that such heroes have lived and mourn those who gave the ultimate sacrifice."
