Description
"Titus County Courthouse, Mount Pleasant, Texas" by Catherine Sherman.
Family members and I like to visit small Texas towns, and some of the most interesting and historic areas are in the historic neighborhoods around courthouses. We were drawn to Mount Pleasant in Titus County to see what was named by many as "The Ugliest Courthouse in Texas." I found the building charming, however, not ugly at all. The courthouse originally was brick with a bell tower. A travel article reported that the most disconcerting aspect was that a loudspeaker blasted music and news from radio station. We visited on a Sunday, and the loudspeaker was blaring a radio station, just as noted.
The current Titus County Texas Courthouse, the fifth courthouse in that county, was built in 1895. The building underwent a couple of transformations since its construction in the county seat of Mount Pleasant, which is in northeast Texas. The current exterior is a return to its 1940s Art Deco style.
Of the 254 counties in Texas, we've only seen about a dozen, so we have a lot more courthouses to visit.
