Title
The Old Mill El Molina Viejo
Artist
David Lloyd Glover
Medium
Painting - Watercolor On Paper
Description
Completed in 1816, El Molina Viejo was the grist mill for Mission San Gabriel. In 1890, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore fame Gutzon Borglum and his wife used the Old Mill as subject for paintings. I came acroos El Molina Viejo quite by accident. I was on my first road trip to Los Angeles and was actually looking for the Mission for some Spanish architecture. The mill was identified by a small wooden signpost. There was no people on the property so I just went to work sketching this scene before the light was gone. Years later I researched the name and learned of its history. Original transparent watercolor on 300 lb cold-pressed paper 22” x 30” by master watercolorist, David Lloyd Glover

The Director of the Foundation that manages the Old Mill said this view is a bit different than when I painted this 27 years ago....they had to remove the grape vines that were damaging the adobe.
