Description
The office block at No.30 St Mary Axe opened in 2004 and was soon affectionately known as The Gherkin. The road is named after the nearby Church of St Mary Axe, the 'axe' part referring to a relic kept in the church.
The Gherkin stands out as one of the City of London's most stunning and critically acclaimed architectural features. Looming up at 180 metres tall it towers over nearby constructions and with its tessellated glass exterior and unique energy-saving methods it was voted the most admired new building in the world in 2005. It's hard to miss if you're wandering around the City and, while it's not open to the public it's worth a visit just to stand at the base and take in its sleek smooth structure.

It certainly is a striking building! Terrific capture Terri. What has caught my attention in this image is the amount of construction happening judging my the number of cranes!

This is a great image Terri. I love the way the focal length is compressed, which emphasises how built up this part of London is, and there is more being added as shown by the numerous cranes, love it.
