Description
Along the Washington State side of the Columbia Gorge, in the small area known as Maryhill, a most unlikely memorial, and the first memorial constructed to honour United States World War I veterans, exists. Located on a barren landscape filled with scrub brush, uneven rock, and the odd irrigated farm, the Maryhill Stonehenge, an exact concrete replica of the English Stonehenge, seeming pops up out of nowhere, a seeming oddity in a seemingly odd location.
It was commissioned in the early twentieth century by businessman Samuel Hill and dedicated on July 4, 1918 as a memorial to those who had died in World War I. The memorial was completed in 1929.
Designed in a circular pattern with rows of columns, many of the col
umns contain mounted plaques which name WWI soldiers from Klicitat County, Washington on them. In the center lies an altar stone, which is placed to be aligned with sunrise on the Summer Solstice. Hill, informed that the original Stonehenge had been used as a sacrificial site, therefore constructed the replica as a reminder that humanity is still being sacrificed to the god of war.
The dedication plaque on the altar stone is inscribed: "In memory of the soldiers of Klickitat County who gave their lives in defense of their country. This monument is erected in the hope that others inspired by the example of their valor and their heroism may share in that love of liberty and burn with that fire of patriotism which death can alone quench."

In this digitally edited image, the milky way is shown behind the landmark, giving it an ageless and atmospheric look.

Great image of this memorial. I visited there, and not expecting anything much after having been to the original in the UK, was really amazed at the energy I could feel when I stepped inside. The starry sky is just perfect for the surreal feeling. lf
