Stem to Sky A Hummingbird Flies. Hummingbirds are amazing creatures--there aren't many people who would argue. Perhaps we marvel at their speed, accuracy, and agility. Maybe it's the beauty in the brief moments that we are able to see them hover, their tiny wings vigorously moving 50 times per second, the delicate creatures deciding whether to take a closer look at a flower or spend a few seconds at the feeders we place out for them. Then, as soon as they appear, they are gone, excelling over 30 mph to zip back to the safety of a tree or to avoid the confrontation of another rival coming in for a drink. Many times, it's only by way of our hearing do we know that they are near--we hear their wings, beating so quickly that they produce the sound in which we identify them, and we eagerly look around, hoping to spot our extraordinary friends--hoping for that glimpse that gives us such pleasure. How alert they always are in flight, reacting like a finely tuned machine, agility like no other, and so preciously vulnerable, we wonder how something so small can possibility survive in such a challenging habitat. But they do survive. And they are successful. Perhaps they rely on instincts, following their heart and trusting in themselves, each movement and reaction keeping them safe and alive--able to carry on and to be successful--a beautiful work of art, and here in this image, a hummingbird glances at a calla lily, and for some reason I think, some ridiculous protocol that somehow makes sense, as she looks from stem to sky, a hummingbird flies.
