Description
This beginning reader story book is a comical tale by Tom Tittle using words beginning with the letter "H" about a queen's outrageous hats and how her embarrassed husband, the king, hides them from her. The underlying theme of the story is that in any good relationship there should be compromise. The queen gives up her outrageous hats for ordinary ones and the king wears matching hats. The story is cleverly written for children aged 5 to 8.
I had complete freedom to interpret the story as I saw it and, since the queen had the same name as my husband's aunt Hermoine, I based the appearance of the character on her. It was a riot to come up with illustrations to suit Mr. Tittle's marvelous story of sabotage and intrigue in the royal hat world. When the clever queen devised a plan to convince the king to wear hats, the choice of hat was obvious for me: every child wants a fire fighter's hat. For the final illustration, I decided that both king and queen should wear matching baseball caps and there was nothing more fitting than THE KANSAS CITY ROYALS outfits for this royal couple. For the most part, four to six-year-old children would probably not be aware of these subtle choices, but I believe they might give a chuckle to the adults reading the story with them.
