Description
This is one of my restoration projects. I have restored many old master and impressionist paintings and this small canvas by French artist J. Batjien was one of the more difficult assignments.
I try to resurrect a painting with as little evident change to the original painting as possible. This small canvas was in a bad state of deterioration. Having been in the original frame since the late 1800's the piece had become home to numerous small critters that literally ate the back the of the painting away. The canvas was dry to the point of being like autumn leaves in your hands. Significant paint loss throughout and the level of accumulated grime on both the front and back of the painting had rendered this almost a goner. The cleaning took days to achieve and then the canvas had to be reconditioned and the painting remounted on its original stretcher bars. The retouching of color loss was accomplished all under a high powered loupe so that very little actual overpainting occured. The result is a faithful rebirth of the artists original artwork. The painting looks as clean and fresh as the day the artist first completed the work so many years ago. This will be returned to the original collector's family with the period gesso frame (also restored).
