Description
There's a very special story behind this rose I'd like to share. When I lived in Texas, I had a beautiful garden that went all the way around my back yard. In that garden, in addition to dozens of unique daylilies, Hawaiian ginger, amaryllis, I had some 40 different roses. Many of them were climbers such as America, Climbing Peace, Joseph's Coat, 4th of July, Don Juan, Golden Showers, New Dawn, etc. and for those my husband hand crafted some beautiful rose arbors.
Along one fence though, I wanted to plant a couple of antique roses from the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham, Texas. I had a local nursery order a gorgeous purple rose called Veilchenblau and excitedly planted the two specimens in a newly created bed. To my surprise, when they grew and bloomed, they were NOT a Veilchenblau at all but a stunning, profusely blooming rambling pink rose.
The Emporium didn't know how the mix up had happened either so they had no idea of what they had sent instead. For all our efforts, the nurseryman and I were unable to identify the rose except to guess that it was perhaps a cross between an Old Blush and another old garden rose now cultivated as Peggy Martin (a vintage rose that survived hurricane Katrina in Peggy Martin's New Orleans' garden). In any event, within a year, this glorious multiflora rambled its way 20 feet in either direction from the trunk and having two of them meant that my entire 80 foot fence was completely covered in small pink roses that bloomed repeatedly from mid-February through early December. I've never seen anything like it. And even though I did all the gardening, my husband absolutely loved the roses and this pink rambler in particular.
In the fall of 2000, already terminally ill with colon cancer, my husband suffered a massive heart attack. But he was such a strong man and such a fighter that he just held on long after the doctors said there was no hope of recovery. I was able to bring him home with the help of hospice. From our bedroom, he could look out over the back yard and see some of the late autumn blooming flowers, including the pink rambler. Gradually, he failed, slipping in and out of consciousness in the last week or so of his life. But on December 2 in a lucid few moments, he asked me if the rambler was still blooming. It WAS - and perhaps more profusely than ever. I ran out and clipped several clusters of blooms to bring them back into the bedroom so he could see them for himself. His smile was just beautiful and he said, "You sure got lucky with that mistake, hon." Two days later, he was gone, slipping away peacefully in spite of the pain he was in.
That rose was so incredibly special to both of us that I tried to bring one of the two plants with me when I moved back to New York a couple of years later. Sadly, it did not survive the vicious winter we had that year, having spent too much time in the warm and sunny South. But after a long search, I have found a supplier who can replace that rose but grown on northern root stock so next spring, I hope to see my pink rambler climbing a new arbor on the south side of the house, protected from the winter winds. And I will have a constant reminder of my husband's last smile.
Whenever I see pictures of that rose I can't help but think of Nat King Cole's delightful song, "Ramblin' Rose."
Ramblin' rose, ramblin' rose
Why you ramble, no one knows
Wild and wind-blown, that's how you've grown
Who can cling to a ramblin' rose?
Ramble on, ramble on
When your ramblin' days are gone
Who will love you with a love true
When your ramblin' days are GONE
Ramblin' rose, ramblin' rose
Why I want you, heaven knows
Though I love you with a love true
Who can cling to a ramblin' rose?

This painting is an ORIGINAL digital art work created on the computer from an original photograph, hand-painted on a Wacom tablet using a variety of painting styles and digital mediums. I am a western New York based artist with a passion for the sea and a deep love for the natural world around me. My paintings are sometimes based on images in the public domain or on elements from classic art work. Other paintings are based on original photographs. All are painted on a Wacom tablet using a variety of painting programs and filters and because the final creations are entirely digital in nature they are considered to be original art work not reproductions. According to the International Association of Fine Art Digital Print Makers (IAFADP), "An original digital print is not based upon using original artwork outside of the computer. The artist may use elements as source materials, such as photographs, drawings or other appropriated images, but THE FINAL FORM OF THE WORK EXISTS ONLY IN THE COMPUTER AND AS THE FINAL PRINT OR AS AN EDITION OF PRINTS." Furthermore, as explained by George Whale and Naren Barfield in a speech to the IAFADP in 2001, "with an electronic pen (stylus), drawings and paintings can be created entirely on the computer using synthetic tools and materials, many of which have their own distinctive qualities." And according to ArtBusiness.com, there is a distinct difference in value between a print/scan of an original watercolor, painting or photograph "...as opposed to original digital works of art created by digital artists entirely or in part on computers which ARE considered to be unique." Similarly, the International Fine Print Dealers Association states, "The IFPDA defines an original print as a work of art on paper which has been conceived by the artist to be realized as a print, rather than as a reproduction of a work in another medium." This is exactly how I create my original works and each painting is the result of many layers of hand-painting in various styles (impasto, pen and ink, digital oils, etc.) then overlaid upon one another.
You can purchase quality traditional style fine art prints of these digital paintings, giclee canvas prints, acrylic and metallic prints by Lianne Schneider. They are beautiful and stylish decor for any wall in your home, office or lobby. My works include detailed landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, flowers and more...all with the look and feel of classic oil paintings. The FAA-Watermark will NOT appear on any final product!
Please contact the artist, Lianne Schneider, directly if you purchase this image as a giclee print on canvas, framed or unframed. A signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity is available for each canvas indicating title of the work, my name, date of creation, a thumbnail of the painting, the origin of original work if the painting is a derivative, the number of your print in the limited printing and a guarantee that the work will no longer be available to the public in a canvas format once a total of 25 canvas prints are sold from all potential vendors.

A very beautiful painting, Lianne, and such a wonderful story to go with it! I know what you mean about southern and northern plantings. In a Florida nursery I said..."Oh, look, Stella D'Oro lilies just like at home!" "No", said the owner, "Stella Bella!!" I said, "But they LOOK just the same." She said, "Yes, but these will grow in Florida." (LOL, who knew?) So are you saying you have no photographs of your Texas roses? When I think back on the days before digital cameras I feel sad about how limited picture taking was back then. And we were at the mercy of developers who set their machine and treated every photo the same way. Plus we even had to pay for our mistakes, no delete option! So I hope somehow you do have photographs of that lovely back yard, just for the memories, even if you don't choose to use them for paintings now. ;-)
Lianne Schneider replied:
I do have some pictures Jade - quite a few of the roses and some with my grandkids. So I have lovely memories I can relive. But you're right - the pictures aren't the quality they would be today and that means I have to use them only for paint reference since I can't post them as photos. Thanks so much for your lovely comment xo

It brought tears to my eyes but I'm so happy you found a replacement for the one you lost from the winter weather and I so hope your new one will provide you with special blooms and many hours of viewing pleasure and of course wonderful new memories. hugs l/f
