I have been painting on hardboard since 1962. I prefer to prepare my own custom panels as I have control over the sizes and the preparation of the board. Hardboard seems to be far more durable than stretched canvas that can be so easily dented or punctured. I have also found that the paint film is more stable with hardboard as the board expands and contracts less than canvas hence no cracking or flaking even on paintings that are four decades old.

Very beautiful colors, and congrats on the sale. You mentioned painting on hard board, is that masonite you treated yourself? I have found that Ampersand.com makes some hard boards that are pre-treated and I am interested in trying them. The two to choose from are the Gessoboard and Clayboard. I was just wondering if you had tried them and what you thought of them. I typically had been painting on linen but found the 3 days it takes to prep the canvas to be 100% smooth for the Flemish method of 5-6 layers more than I want to do. The Ampersand panels can be purchased with different finishes. Ro
