Description
"Multnomah Falls" by Catherine Sherman.
In August 2017, I visited Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon and one of the most popular waterfalls in the country. The Eagle Creek forest fire roared all around the falls in September 2017, but firefighters successfully fought to save the immediate area, including the historic lodge, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Multnomah Falls is on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, east of Troutdale, between Corbett and Dodson, along the Historic Columbia River Highway.
The falls drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 feet (165 meters) and a lower falls of 69 feet (21 meters) with a gradual nine-foot drop (three-meter) drop in elevation between the two, so the total height of the waterfall is usually given as 620 feet (189 meters). The drops are due to a zone of more easily eroded basalt at the base of the upper falls.
A paved foot trail leads to Benson Footbridge, a 45-foot-long bridge that allows visitors to cross 105 feet 932 meters) above the lower waterfall. A lodge with a restaurant and gift shop is near the base of the falls. The lodge is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Multnomah Falls formed at the end of a hanging valley created by the Missoula Floods at the end of the Ice Age.
