Description
Mount St. Helens is located in Southwestern Washington and noted for the eruption in 1980. Fifty-seven people lost their lives, and 250 homes, 47 bridges, and 185 miles of highway were destroyed. Leading up to the eruption we lived in Portland, Oregon and we all watched as the earthquakes on the mountain became more constant. We also had many instances of dusting of ash from the awakening volcano.
A huge debris avalanche set off by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale caused the eruption that reduced the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677 ft to 8,363 ft which left a one mile wide horseshoe-shaped crater.

I still see a dead zone at the bottom of the eruption site. But life goes on around it as you so beautifully document. L/F
