Description
"Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse Under Blue Skies" by Catherine Sherman.
The Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse stands on a hill in the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the Flint Hills near Strong City, Kansas, part of the National Park Service in partnership with the Nature Conservancy, which owns most of the land.
There is an old pump still standing in the side yard, where children and their teacher got water.
Here the bright blue cloudless sky reminds me of "Home on the Range," the Kansas state Song: "Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day."
Bison do roam near the school and maybe pronghorn antelope, too.
Built from limestone in 1882 and opened in 1884 when a teacher was hired, the school served students until it closed in 1930. The schoolhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The preserve protects a nationally significant example of the once vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Of the 400,000 square miles (1,000,000 km2) of tallgrass prairie that once covered the North American continent, less than four percent remains, primarily in the Flint Hills. Since 2009, the preserve has been home to the growing Tallgrass Prairie bison herd.
