Twilight. Sunset. Dusk. The gloaming hour. Eventide.
There are many words and phrases to describe that time of day when the sun descends in the west, ending the day in preparation for evening.
It is a quiet time, a moment of calmness, one that invites us to stop what we’re doing and experience a sense of ease, a recognition of a day well lived with work well done as we look forward to a period of rest and repose.
This is as it should be. In our society – one filled with corporate work slogans that sound like manifestos, the honk of traffic and beep of phones, the droning of the TV in the background -- it is easy to overlook the gloaming hour, to push past it into the next task, the next commercial, the next latest and greatest news announcement.
The artwork, Long Shadows in Zion, takes us to a place that is far away from the TV, phone, screen, sidewalks, office cubicle. The mountains in the background are bathed in shadow, as are the bushes in the foreground, while the last golden light of sunlight brushes gently, easily across the grass of the fields. There is not even the whisper of a breeze.
Can you hear the silence? Can you FEEL it?
Standing behind the rustic fence, looking out into the panoramic view of the mountains, we breathe deeply and slowly, yet quietly, because we don’t want any sound to interrupt the moment, to break up and into the sense of extreme stillness. The changes in the landscape, the lighting, are slow yet inexorable, and as one minute transitions into the next the shadows lengthen and grow stronger.
It is late afternoon. Then early evening. Then dusk, twilight, sunset and soon, night, and the end of this day.
Rest in the silence.
