Description
This simple, Greek-revival house in Springfield, Illinois, served as the home of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln from 1844-1861. The Lincoln's purchased the home and land for $1,200 in 1844 from the minister who performed thier 1842 wedding, the Rev. Charles Dresser. Originally a one story house, the Lincoln's added a second story in 1856 to accommodate their growing family.
Lincoln's home, and the surounding four blocks now reside under the care of the National Park Service. The home appears as it did in 1860 when Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States.
While the home does not compare in grandeur to that of Thomas Jefferson or the grounds to George Washington's Mount Vernon, Lincoln's home in Springfield reflects to Illinois lawyer's advance in life. Born in a Kentucky log cabin, Lincoln epitomized the hope of a better life through education and hard work in the frontier regions of 19th century America.
