Human beings have a tendency to overlook and undervalue the things in life that are truly worth something.
Take water for example.
When it came time to “discover” the “new world,” the investor-backed adventurers and eventual invaders from Europe were out to go for the gold, literally. Valuable land to them consisted of something sitting on a gold mine, or silver. It still does.
But there were many lands, many places that the people already living in the “new world” valued for more prosaic reasons, such as a river running through it. Water, a necessity of life for all people, whether they are hunter gatherers, farmers, or city folk, is essential in a way that gold and silver, lithium and diamonds, are not. The trinkets and treasures of kings, many now reposing in museums where ordinary folk can see them, do not support life.
The artwork, Land of Water, celebrates a place that is rich with water, both running on the ground and falling from the sky in the form of rain or snow. In the high Wallowa Valley of Oregon, USA, the sunny warm days of summer are preceded by brisk, chill spring days of rain, and those days are preceded by a winter of snow.
The warmer weather of spring melts much of winter’s snow in the surrounding mountains, causing the rivers to rise. Spring rains add to the rivers’ flow, nourishing the meadows of grass. More water, more feeding of the land, more growth, more green. It takes a number of gray days to result in blue-skied, halcyon summer afternoons surrounded by green. One way or another, lush plant life , and humans, need water.
Land of Water is one of those delightful combinations of gray, brooding clouds and golden beams of sunlight – a bit of cool, a bit of warm, a lot of green and the sound of the stream. It is a land where true treasures abound.
