Description
There are a couple of bald eagle nesting sites on my typical kayak trip around the Androscoggin River in Turner, Maine. When I got to the first site on my journey, a brown blob had me asking myself - what the heck is that? Is that a nest or a porcupine? I pulled up my long lens and took a photograph and pulled it in even further on my display. Low and behold, it was a porcupine - just a few branches below the eagle's nest. Now I realize, to most people, porcupines are not a reason for excitement, but those people would not be me. One of the animals I have always wanted to capture and hadn't had the opportunity, was a porcupine. I was so excited! I jumped in the frigid water of the Androscoggin River, pulled my kayak up on the bank and made my way to the bottom of the tree. Unfortunately, the number of branches in the way gave me difficulty, but I was excited to find that I got a couple of decent shots.
Porcupines have a coat of sharp spines, or quills, that protect against predators. Porcupines are indigenous to North America and northern South America. They live in wooded areas and can climb trees, where some species spend their entire lives. Most porcupines are about 60–90 cm (25–36 in) long, with an 20–25 cm (8–10 in) long tail. Weighing 5–16 kg (12–35 lb), they are rounded, large, and slow, and use aposematic strategy of defense. Porcupines occur in various shades of brown, gray, and white. (Wikipedia)
