When we told people in New Zealand that we were heading to Great Barrier Island, every last person told us that we were going to love it! Needless to say, we couldn’t wait to go! After picking up our rental car, we followed the directions to our vacation home, which we rented sight unseen. Since I had made all the arrangements, I was anxious to see where we would be staying. Since this was the view from the deck of the house, framed by New Zealand puhutukawa (New Zealand Christmas tree) trees, I would say I hit a home run! Overlooking Gooseberry Flat in Tryphena on the west side of the island, it was a wonderful place to drink coffee in the morning and have happy hour at night. I liked to think that we were in the “South Pacific”, with all the connotations of a tropical paradise. Great Barrier Island is the largest and most seaward of the Hauraki Gulf islands in Auckland region. With an area of 285 square kilometres (110 sq mi) it is the sixth-largest island of New Zealand and fourth-largest in the main chain. The majority of the island (around 60% of the total area) is administered as a nature reserve by the Department of Conservation making it ideal for hiking, swimming, or just relaxing.
