Description
Abraham Lincoln and his travel party arrived at the Gettysburg Railroad Station approximately 6:00 PM on 18 November 1863--the eve of Lincoln's now famous "Gettysburg Address." The President was not the main speaker at the next day's dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg. That honor fell to the Hon. Edward Everett--renowned antebellum orator, politician, pastor, educator, and diplomat, from Massachusetts. Everett held forth for over two hours before yielding the platform to President Lincoln for a few dedicatory remarks. In two minutes, with 272 words, Lincoln delivered one of the most powerful speeches in American history--the popularly titled "Gettysburg Address." Following the afternoon speech, Lincoln and his travel party--which included Major General Abner Doubleday, the mythical 'inventor' of baseball--departed from the train station at 7:00 PM.
In the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg the station served as hospital, morgue, and transit center. Its life as a train station continued into the 1940s. Today, the Gettysburg Train Station houses a museum.
