Description
Ft. Point Hallway
This image was taken from deep inside Fort Point looking outwards at the courtyard.
Ft. Point construction was started in not long after the Mexican-American war ended. California had been annexed and the gold rush of 1849 started to bring a large number of people west.
The army decided that it might be a good idea to protect the entrance to the San Francisco Bay. The initial construction took 8 years to complete.
With the civil war looming, the first canons were mounted and troops were stationed at the fort in 1861.
The fort is now outdated but has been maintained as a historical structure sitting below the Golden Gate Bridge.
