Fort Mchenry Baltimore Panorama
Artist
Bill Swartwout
Medium
Photograph - Fine Art Photography
Description
Fort McHenry appears partially as it might have appeared in front of (today's versions) of the city it helped protect from British invasion over two centuries ago. This panorama photograph was captured by Bill Swartwout Photography from the deck of Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas as it was sailing from Baltimore Harbor on the Patapsco River.
This waterfront view shows the Star Fort where it existed for the last two centuries and the Fells Point to Canton areas of modern Baltimore in the background. What is today known as the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine was the fort under siege by British warships at the culminating battle of the War of 1812. The Battle ins September, 1814 was the impetus for Francis Scott Key, a Baltimore lawyer, to pen the poem that became our National Anthem, the Star Spangle Banner.
Today, Fort McHenry is, indeed, a national landmark and is visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year. There is now a promenade along the water's edge and a grassy park surrounding the fort.
