Two large elk are walking near a fence in a California rural setting with large oak trees and a twilight sky in the background. One elk is side-eyeing the camera while the other is looking away, as they choose their path through the grass and rocks around them.

American (Rocky Mountain) elk are the largest of the elk family. They move in and out of a sheltered and protected private community in Kern County, California. Capturing the bull elk’s budding velvet antlers was a special treat for me while driving at twilight. We almost missed seeing them standing at the side of the road. Several photos followed and I have uploaded three showing the beauty of those antlers ('Elk Duo Emerging Beauty Refined'; 'Elk Stare Velvet Budding Antlers'; 'Elk Grazing Fluted Velvet Budding Antlers'). I have also made all three available in black and white.

Bucks lose their antlers each spring but they soon grow back into the magnificent ones most of us think of when picturing an elk. Apparently those antlers can grow an inch a day so I feel very lucky to have seen them at just a few days growth.
