Description
This portrait is of a young mountain lion kitten about 6 to 8 months old. Still had blue eyes and a spotted coat. But is it a kitten or a cub?
I did a little research as to the difference between cubs and kittens. And found additional information about big cats. Here is some of what I found. Please let me know if I am on the right track.
The difference between whether a cat young is a kitten or a cub is based on whether or not the parent roars or purrs.
Roaring comes from an elongated larynx and hyoid. When air passes through the larynx the cartilage walls of the larynx vibrate, producing sound. Big cats can only make a purring sound when breathing out which is called chuffing. The hyoid of smaller cats is solid bone. These cats can purr when breathing both in and out, but they can't roar.
Genus Panthera which includes tigers, lions, jaguars, and leopards roar, chuff but cannot purr and have cubs.
Genus Felidae which includes housecats of all breeds, all small wild cats such as, Serval, Asian Leopard Cat, Sand Cat, Cougar and Caracal all purr and have kittens but cannot roar.
