Celestial Discovery- Steve, The Picket Fence And The Milky Way

Description
The Northern Lights phenomenon, "Steve" and it's accompanying picket fence, makes an appearance in the night sky above Kootenay Lake, Nelson, B.C. on September 15, 2017. A recently recognized auroral event, this amazing light show was first "discovered" by photographers who captured the lights on long-exposure images, and who later queried the scientific community as to what it was they were seeing in a conference setting. At that time, the scientific community did not know! In the apx. five years since the science world/NASA has been studying it, it is now believed to be a hot plume of ionized gas. However, research is still very much in it's infancy and ongoing.
Dubbed "Steve" after a movie event by some of those early photographers, the name has remained. The name has now been lengthened to stand for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. The green blobs, are what is called the "picket fence" and sometimes accompany "Steve".
On a personal note, I was one of those early photographers who captured "Steve" before it was known to exist. I thought the unique blobs that showed up in my images were a lens effect, and possibly lights from nearby houses or a close highway. "Pity" I thought " those blobs wrecked the image" . Those images stayed tucked away unseen in my computer for about two years before the "Steve" news broke. At that point, I released them and because they were among the earliest images, and taken from a very southernmost location as compared to most, I am proud to have them included in current research.
In this image, Steve, the Picket Fence and Milky Way are all captured in one frame. It is taken from a rather unique perspective, that of looking almost directly overhead. "Steve" seldom appears like this to the observer- he is almost alway north, south, east, or west to the photographer, due to geographical location. It is the only time out of the handful of times I have witnessed him to be directly overhead...and to have the milky way intersect, what luck!
