Byrons Grotto Porto Venere Italy

Description
The landscape and seascape around Portovenere Italy were a great inspiration to many of the English Romantic poets. Among them Lord Byron particularly loved Portovenere. He was an avid swimmer and is said to have swum from this part of the shore to Lerici, as commemorated by a plaque reading “This Grotto was the inspiration of Lord Byron. It records the immortal poet who as a daring swimmer defied the waves of the sea from Portovenere to Lerici” in 1822 to visit his friend Shelley. Today the Byron Cup swimming challenge commemorates this legendary 7.5 km swim across the Bay of Poets. On the stormy day of my visit, the Mediterranean was more frightening than friendly and I would not have wanted to venture in for a swim! In 1997 Porto Venere and the villages of Cinque Terre were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
