Description
Ladder-backed Woodpeckers are year-around residents of most of Texas, and southern New Mexico, Arizona and California. They also reside in much of Central America and are a non-migrating bird.
This is the female with only black and white feathering. The male will have a red crown.
I spotted this woodpecker in Port Aransas, Texas in early May.
Scientific name: Picoides scalaris
