Description
"Brown Pelican and Palm Trees" by Catherine Sherman.
A brown pelican rests on a post on a pier near a seafood restaurant in the Florida Keys. In the background, an American flag and a line of palm trees wave in the tropical breeze.
The brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is one of three pelican (Pelecanidae) species found in the Americas and one of only two that feed by diving in water.
It's a large and stocky seabird with a long neck and large bill with a stretchy pouch for catching fish. Breeding adults have a dark neck and pale yellow head. Brown pelicans along the Atlantic Ocean coast have a brown-skinned pouch, while those on the Pacific Ocean have a red-skinned pouch.
The brown pelican is the official state bird of Louisiana. In 1903, Theodore Roosevelt set aside the first National Wildlife Refuge, Florida's Pelican Island, to protect the species from hunters.

A wonderful bird is the pelican. His bill can hold more than his belly can. Ogden Nash
