Original photopainting of a barred owl in a nest in the winter woods above the C&O Canal in Potomac, Maryland. Across its wide range of habitats, the C&O Canal provides space for more than 120 diverse bird species. Birds of prey, including owls, hawks and eagles, use the many steep mountain sides and trees in forested areas as vantage points over the river and fields. The still water areas of the canal and the Potomac River's edges provide great habitat for wading birds such as egrets and herons, and attract a variety of waterfowl such as wood ducks and mergansers. Many songbirds, woodpeckers and wild turkeys are found frequently utilizing the variety of wooded and grassland habitats that the C&O Canal provides. (Edited from park service site)
