Description
According to the traditional account, the original flag was made in June 1776, when a small committee including George Washington, Robert Morris and relative George Ross visited Betsy and discussed the need for a new American flag.
Betsy would often tell her children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends of a fateful day, late in May of 1776, when three members of a secret committee from the Continental Congress came to call upon her. Those representatives, George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross, asked her to sew the first flag.
In the middle of the courtyard is a statue of cats. However, there is no historical record of Betsy Ross being particularly partial to felines. This statue was commissioned after the restoration of the house.
